These images seek to describe spiders as I encounter them: beautiful animals that lead fascinating little lives.

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
I keep arthropods, primarily true spiders; I also photograph them, generally concurrent with enclosure maintenance. Some photos are oriented towards documentation, others are more artistic.

The animals’ needs always come first, and I do my best to avoid undue stress. The goal is generally to achieve a nice image that is also reasonably accurate to the spider being portrayed.

The distinction between artistic and documentation-oriented photos is probably more relevant to me than it is externally; I do not label any uploads in either direction. Both will generally be present in galleries, intermixed.

Documentation-oriented photos focus on capturing anatomy, behavior, and individual details in fairly neutral lighting and with as much clarity as possible. I take care to modify these as little as possible. These are sometimes photos I use to identify species. Documentation photos may include sets of very similar images.

Artistic photos are more freeform, and take advantage of the fact that spiders are beautiful animals. With these, I will often make use of colored lighting and other technical tools that may otherwise interfere with things like species identification.

Though I do tend to prefer colorful and garish decorations and thus populate my enclosures with objects matching that description, I pay a lot of attention to the design of the enclosures and the materials used therein. The goal is to give the spider the most ideal microclimate for its specific adaptations/lifestyle at a species and individual level, as best can be attained at both my level of access and knowledge.

The spiders’ needs supercede aesthetic concerns– and this does sometimes mean that materials may be less aesthetic, or there may be attachment hardware or glue visible, or messy applications: it is more important that things be affixed securely than beautifully, that the materials used in the humid enclosure of a moisture-dependent species resist the growth of mold than look non-plastic-y, etc. I will also not disturb webs (or areas where the spider is sitting/resting) in order to clean for photo sessions, unless already necessary during routine care.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Each individual* with photos has a post for their galleries. These posts get edited when new images are added.

Posts get updated as galleries for each relevant shoot gets added. Most significant uploads will be a separate gallery, with the following exceptions: casual, lower quality. Those get a gallery of their own, and additions to that gallery may not be reflected in update dates. Cell phone photos are likely to be in the casual section, unless they meet sufficient requirements for quality and/or formality.

* some spiders may be listed together if they were housed together for any length of time, but this is vanishingly rare. Most species will happily eat conspecifics, so they are almost always housed individually.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Some spiders are purchased, while others are collected by myself, often incidentally.

I started keeping spiders because I was deeply arachnophobic, but killing animals to assuage my unreasonable fears of them did not sit well with me. One of my partners is also of a population likely to be sensitive to spider bites, and thus would be at excessive risk should he receive one. At the time, we lived in a house replete with Yellow Sac Spiders– while most spiders will go out of their way to avoid biting non-prey, yellow sac spiders are reputed to do so slightly less than other species. Keeping them deliberately meant I knew exactly where they were, safely away from my partner (for his sake) and the cats (for the spiders’ sake). Thus, I got into the habit of catching and observing the spiders I found throughout my house. Which required researching them fairly extensively. Which turns out to be a very effective way to reduce arachnophobia.

(I still do not like touching spiders or other arthropods, but that’s probably extremely mutual.)

I continue to do this with many species I find indoors/in my immediate location. This is what I mean by “collected incidentally.” Since leaving the USA, I do now also keep some species that I have purchased intentionally as part of the hobby. Therefore, all individuals recorded from the USA prior to 2026 were therefore personally collected, but any spiders documented in/after 2026 may have wider origins.

I do not breed spiders (this being the condition my partners requested when they agreed to live with these animals), but some individuals who were found as adults may have paired prior to entering my care. Individuals pictured with egg sacs fall into this category.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
I take care to avoid speculation or lack of clarity in the written notes I provide, as much as possible. These notes are significantly abridged.

I maintain a significantly more extensive log for each spider, but that level of information would be superfluous to the goal of this site.

I have tried to identify to the level of reasonable certainty, but please bear in mind that i am not an expert! I do not do dissections, and many species of spider cannot be identified accurately without confirmation via dissection. Additionally, while I was lucky enough to beg the attention of some local archeologists from time to time when I lived in the USA, I have not been so lucky in my new location, and so i have since had to rely on imprecise software like iNaturalist.

so, USA identifications are probably solid to the genus level or so. Species-level are more questionable.

postUSA identifications are slightly less solid than the USA identifications

Species in parenthesis are best guesses beyond the point where I can be sure of my identification.

non-italics in single quotes following a scientific name indicates locality. E.g, phiddipus regius ‘everglades’

Size is generally the most recently recorded size at time of update.

Location data is very generalized; what I provide here is NOT nearly specific enough for identification purposes. I maintain much more specific data in their logs.

Dates in category in/after 2026 refer to when the spider was acquired, excepting the pre2026 category

tags and/or categories called ‘guest’ refer to spiders I photograph but did not keep. They sometimes go into enclosures temporarily, get a meal, and then are released to go on their merry way. They are also sometimes photographed in situ.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
I do not specifically note what software or equipment I use in my work, but mostly for the sake of efficiency.

If available, I can provide information certain setups or what cameras were used. In general, I make use of phone cameras (iphones) for casual shots and some formal shots; sometimes I make use of various clip-on lenses for phone cameras. I also use an Olympus TG-7.

Editing is generally done in adobe lightroom.

I do not intentionally use AI in my work. I try to avoid using it at all, but at time of writing adobe has been sneaking features in amongst the normal tools.

I also do not use AI in writing or editing. All typos, archaic structures, unusual phrasings, and parentheticals are my own.

</details>

<p class="has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1
